“I have been thinking about water for some time now. As a weaver and an artist whose practice is materials-based, I have spent a long time searching for the right materials to imbue works with specific qualities. Some examples of this material centering include the use of tea, bleach,
wine, mason's twine, cubic zirconia earrings, etc. The key ingredient in my woven work is
cotton. I admire this material for its physical properties but I also employ it for its place within
American history. I feel tasked to use cotton for all its beauty and the brutal story it has been a
part of in this country. I have begun to think lately that if each element adds substance to the
work, if a materials list can impart additional context, then what about the source of the water
used to dye the yarns? Could water not be as important to a work as a title or a thread? A
carrier of meaning.”
“It is my aim to travel throughout the country and collect water from sources relative to my
investigations of water as they relate to the black experience. This water will be used in the
production of woven and sculptural fiber works. Aesthetically, work will take cues from the
environments of the bodies of water and American quilting patterns.”
